class highlights

After taking this class, I view  the first amendment in a different way. At first I was a bit ignorant as to how much we can use the first amendment as one of our rights. Now that I am more aware of this right, I have become more careful as to what I post or say on the internet. I now know that we are protected from the government for our first amendment but not corporate companies.
here's is a video clip about a young man who got fired because he mentioned about the company and job he works at in a video:

I view the media as another tool for our society to be kept under somewhat a hegemonic control. From this class I intake different perceptions of what the messages the media put out for people. It's made me realize some of the effects the media has on my own personal lifestyle.

Media Ethics/Media Law

Free Bird

in this article, a man is pulled over several times by the police. The reason: not because he violated the law, but because he had discretely pulled out his middle finger at them. In about any lawsuits dealing with the flipping of the bird to an officer, it is usually dismissed in court.
Apparently, flipping the bird is protected by the first amendment as a form of freedom of expression.

In a sense, the act of pulling the middle finger to anyone can bring up dissatisfaction, even to the police. I think the protection of the first amendment brings up a lot of contradictions morally and ethically. The free bird can not get you in jail or receive some sort of punishment but it does bring out a bad ambiance.

Propaganda Techniques

one of my favorite commercials ever is for DHL delivery service. The advertisement is directed and made in Korea.
one of the propaganda techniques that this advertisement uses is the
slogan technique. At the end of the video, the DHL slogan is "we deliver. whatever" it appeals to the audience because the slogan phrases that they can deliver any kind of item or in this case, a kiss. The commercial uses a comedic approach which gives a light heart sentimental feeling to the phrase.
Another technique this advertisement uses is the half-truth. The commercial states that they are able to deliver anything, but in fact it is common sense that kisses or affection can not be delivered by delivery service men.

Internet

There has been many cases in which people have gotten into dilemmas with what they post online. Theses posts are mainly on facebook, twitter, myspace, and etc. If these negative posts and comments that these individuals make are found out by a management or company that these individuals work at, they can be punished by their terms.  Most consequences results in losing one's job or even losing a relationship (as mentioned in one of my previous post, media impact)

In this video, a young successful YouTuber, Timothy, tells the story of how his tweets on Twitter got him fired from his weekly job.  His work place and company found a tweet in which Timothy was distasteful of their new uniforms. The company also went through his other older tweets and found another  negative comment that he made. Timothy was then emailed and called in to be fired. Warning: contains mild language.

I think this is a great example of how far social networking sites have exposed most of our personal opinions and life to our professional life. Although we might believe that these posts that we make on the internet is useless or we may believe that no one may read them, in the future we have to be more cautious of what we have to post. But then again, I believe we should have the right of freedom of speech and these corporations have no right to lurk into our personal life.

Movies

One of my favorite movies from 2010 is Toy Story 3

I grew up with Toy Story and it has such a sentimental feeling to it. The old characters and their new adventures brings back my child hood. I like it how the film and series have such a wide variety of audience. It gives family time a nice touch because it sure is a classic.Personally, I enjoyed watching this movie in the theaters because the whole audience laughing makes the film much more comedic and enjoyable.
here is a trailer to Toy Story 3

My absolutely all time favorite film is Howl's Moving Castle

I absolutely enjoyed the animation and plot in this film. It brings in fantasy in such an enchanting manner. The targeted audience is very diverse too. While animation films are more targeted towards children, this film also has subtle symbolism of human drama.  I have always been a fan of Mr. Hayao Miyazaki's works and this one really stayed as my favorite.
I have seen this movie in DVD format.
